Name of project: Shelter: human-environment interactions in karst around pleistocene/holocene transition
Responsible researcher (Slovakia): Adrián Nemergut
Anotácia:
The shelter project will deal with the important topic of climatic change and human response to it. An example of the environmental changearound the Pleistocene/Holocene transition is the most recent event, which can help us to catch regional differences of this global issue. Alarger scale and comparison within Central Europe is necessary. Karstic areas are present in all V4 countries, so they form a potential for acomparative dataset on a central European scale. Under the rock shelters and in the caves are usually well-preserved palaeoenvironmentaland archaeological records, so they are ideal places to study human-environment interactions within climatic change. Within the project willbe done excavations of two sites: the rockshelter (Skalice u Měňan (CZ) and the cave (Veľká ružínska (SK). From both are known well-preserved situations with archaeological and palaeoenvironmental record. This excavation will aim to collect new data, but even moreimportant will be to link what we know about the environment itself (phytolith analysis, charcoal, malacozoological, macroremain analyses)with the information on how did people used natural resources, especially plants (phytolith and starch analyses of the microremains on thetools and use-wear analysis). Fieldwork should also serve to form an international research group focused on the topic of karsticarchaeology. Another important point will be to disseminate information about the necessary protection of these sites and their actual way ofresearch between the general public, students, and semi-professional speleologists.

Abstrakt: The project is focused on prospecting and investigation of selected tumuli from the turn of the Eneolithic and the Bronze Age which are located in the territory of the Východoslovenská nížina basin and the southern part of the Ondavská vrchovina mountains. The investigation will include archival sources and finds from older excavations. The goal of the project is to obtain new information from molecular genetics, radiocarbon, strontium, petrographic, archaeozoological and other analyses which will contribute to better assessment of the archaeological material from the studied tumuli. The obtained data will also be useful for solving geographically and culturally more general topics associated with the study of chronology, genesis, steppe elements and direct impacts of the Yamnaya and Corded Ware cultures in the regions of the Northern Tisza territory in the 3rd millenium BC. The concept of the project also follows from the cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Archaeology of SAS which took place in the 1990s.

Name of project: Exploring Bronze Age Society: The rise and fall of fortified settlement in Spišský Štvrtok (Slovakia)
Responsible researcher: Mgr. Dominika Oravkinová, PhD.
Abstract: The project thematically focusses on the fortified settlement in Spišský Štvrtok from the turn of the Early Bronze Age to the Middle Bronze Age, which is situated at the foothills of the Western Carpathians in North-Eastern Slovakia. The site has long been the focal point of the professional community due to large-scale systematic excavations that have placed this locality on the list of pivotal sources required to obtain knowledge about the phenomenon of fortified settlements in Central–Eastern Europe. The potential of this settlement is emphasised by a rare collection of archaeological records that contribute to solving wider social questions pertaining to the Late Prehistoric Period. The representativeness of the material culture provides motivation to further undertake a cross-disciplinary analysis. Modes of production and differences in the selection of manufacturing techniques reflect environmental as well as socio-economic, cultural and chronological parameters. Standardised or unique production processes, tool work schemes and their causal relations reflect the characteristics of the local technical system, which seems to be the key element in reconstructing the socio-economic relations of past communities. The transmission of elements of technical systems may be a crucially important indication in interpreting the social relations of communities from various settlements across the Carpathian macro-region. In recent years, the issue of stone walls dating, which are a part of the site fortification, has been highly discussed. As sporadic findings don’t exclude its association with the La Tène Age, evidence supporting their exact dating to the Early Bronze Age is absent. Conducting a revisory excavation to verify stratigraphic relations and obtaining samples, which can be dated using the methods of absolute chronology, seems essential in resolving the questionable dating. Their classification within the Bronze Age might present another proof of the sophistication of the contemporary population.

Barbarian Elite Leather Textiles
No. of project: SoE/2019/692/BELT
Start of project: 1. 5. 2019
End of project: 30. 4. 2022
Name of project: From the Late Roman Border to the Barbarian Hinterland: A Study of Leather and Textile Objects Found in Germanic Elite Graves of the 4th and 5th Centuries AD, with a Focus on the Territory of Slovakia
Responsible researcher: Mgr. Tereza Štolcová, PhD.
Abstract: The BELT project (Barbarian Elite Leather Textiles) proposes an innovative and comprehensive scientific approach to an analysis and reassessment of leather and textile finds from Germanic elite graves in Slovakia dated to the Late Roman and Early Migration Periods (4th and 5th centuries AD). The core of the project is the unique double-chambered wooden grave from Poprad-Matejovce, where a blend of Barbaric and Roman elements is evident, also in the leather and textile finds. The main objectives are to provide new insights into the manufacturing technology of these objects in relation to other contemporary elite graves, to identify their function, and to develop a method of recognising and differentiating the expression of the status via leather and textile goods. Leather is an understudied material in the archaeological sources in Slovakia and thus the project is crucial for Slovak archaeology. Since there are no experts in the analysis of archaeological leather or textiles in Slovakia, during the planned scholarship at the Centre for Textile Research (CTR) at the University of Copenhagen and at the Danish National Museum, I wanted to gain practical experience and technical training. I would therefore like to broaden my knowledge of textile fibre analysis within the Slovak Academy of Sciences – Seal of Excellence project by identifying skin types and to learn about modern analysis techniques such as proteomics or genomics. The BELT project will thus build up a solid basis for the methods of systematic research on leather and textiles in Slovakia and beyond. Given the focus on archaeological leather, the project will constitute a new research domain, that is highly relevant also in a wider European context. Within the project, I will strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration not only between the researchers in Slovakia, but also with specialised institutions in Europe. Given that the project is not feasible in its entirety, as originally submitted in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions: Individual Fellowships program, I reduced the project objectives to those that are feasible from Slovakia and during short-term foreign business trips.
