The Roman fort
of “Kelemantia” lies directly on the left bank of the Danube
in the limits of the modern village of Iža (Komárno district,
Slovakia). It is situated only 4 kilometres east of the confluence
of the rivers Váh and Danube. As a bridgehead of the legionary
fortress in Brigetio once it was a segment of the fortification
chain system of limes romanus. The limes was a
frontier protecting the Roman Empire. The area where the fort used
to be in Roman period, today terrain only slightly rises as a
square shaped plateau from the surrounding plane. Its name is Leányvár
(Virgins castle).
